Arguments against a global flood often fall under this line of reasoning.
#1 Considering the highest mountains, Mt Everest, some 29,000 feet high. Critics states that there is not enough water in the earth , on the earth, or above the earth to cover these high mountains. Recent calculations show that if we gathered together all the waters in the heavens and the earth, it would only amount to approximately 22% of what would be needed to create a global flood; covering the highest mountains. Yet the bible seems to state it clearly "everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died." Gen 7:22) It also states that all the earth was flooded. One might ask, how does the critics get around this clear language? The answer is, they point out places where the bible speaks of the whole world, such as when the King of Babylon ruled the "whole world." Obviously he did no rule North America. These arguments appear strong at first glance. However, as is always the case, there is "the another side."
Lets look at some facts that seem to make the idea of a local flood some what foolish.
#1 If it was a local flood, why would God burden Noah with the responsibility of building an ark that took the greater part of a one hundred years to construct. In a local flood all Noah would have needed to do, would be to move some where else.
#2 There would be no need to "save" the animals. Instinct alone would move them to higher ground.
#3 God's promise in Gen 9:11 "Never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth" If Noah's flood was local, then God has broken this promise thousands of times over.
The problems the critics face with their "high mountain" problems is this, They only assume that the earth and mountains were of old as they are today. This assumption is wrong. The bible tells us the world at that time was one land mass and one language. it also appears that all living conditions at that time was tropic. The flood is in fact what caused the high mountains to form. Other evidences of the global flood is,
#1 Earth's geological features requires a catastrophic explanation.
#2 Great fossil beds exist requiring rapid burial on a massive scale
#3 Mountains that's made of ocean bottom rocks... Wonder how they got there.
